🔥 Alder as firewood

Alder is technically a hardwood, but it’s a relatively light, low-density hardwood. That gives it some very useful characteristics:

  • Lights very easily — one of alder’s biggest advantages.
  • Produces a lively, attractive flame and gets heat into a room quickly.
  • Burns relatively quickly compared with ash, oak and beech.
  • Produces less heat per volume than dense hardwoods such as oak and ash, so you need to refuel more frequently
  • Easy to split because of its relatively straight, workable grain.
  • Dries relatively quickly, particularly when split and stacked with good airflow.
  • When properly dry, it can give a clean, relatively low-smoke burn.

🪵 Where alder really comes into its own

I’d describe alder as a fast, bright-burning hardwood rather than a long-burning heating wood.

It’s particularly good for:

🔥 Getting a fire going
Because it catches readily, it’s excellent for establishing a hot fire quickly.

🔥 Shorter fires
Great for taking the chill off in autumn or spring, or when you don’t want a fire burning for hours.

🔥 Smaller stoves
Its lower density can actually be an advantage where you don’t want to overwhelm a smaller stove with big, dense logs.

🔥 Mixing with other hardwoods
You could combine it with birch and ash: alder and birch give you quick ignition and lively flames, while ash contributes greater density, heat and a longer-lasting ember bed.

🍖 Smoking food
Alder produces a mild, slightly sweet smoke and is traditionally used for smoking salmon and other foods.
